Visitor's Feedback
Submitted by: Neville and Emma Lewis March 29, 2005
We have been visiting Portland for the last 16 years. Our thoughts are that there is a real need to preserve the environment and that much stronger environmental education programs are needed for local fishermen, farmers and residents in general. Its "greenness" and natural beauty is what it really has to offer and it must be nurtured. Developments should be strictly regulated, old buildings refurbished to preserve its character...otherwise it will become an anonymous, ugly resort like all the others.
Beaches should be kept clean at all times (parts of Port Antonio are still very dirty and polluted). And environmental issues INCLUDE NOISE POLLUTION!! People are attracted to the area for its peace and quiet and don't want to suffer from loud sound systems late into the night. We spent a terrible weekend with back to back noise from a hotel in Fairy Hill, it was much noisier than Kingston! This must be strictly regulated, it will drive your discerning tourist away in no time. If people want noise they can go to Ocho Rios!
